When it comes to impaired vision, a person will generally be either longsighted or short sighted. These two common eye conditions are caused by light not focusing correctly on the retina. Nonetheless, both cases are easily corrected depending on their severity. Some of the most common forms of treatment include prescription glasses, contact lenses or laser eye surgery.
Short sightedness is also referred to as Myopia, while Hypermetropia refers to long sightedness. A distinguishing difference between these eye conditions is that a short sighted person will see objects close to them clearly, while distance objects will appear blurry. On the other hand, a person with long sightedness will have a blurred vision of objects near them, but will have a clear vision for objects far away from them.
In a long sighted person, near object forms behind the retina, causing them to appear blurred. This may be because of an eye that is too short, or there is the problem with the cornea or crystalline lens, which impairs the ability to refract enough light. While this inability to see closer objects mostly affects adults over 40, it is common in children and babies. People with this condition will mostly complain of tiredness after having strained their eyes with activities that involves focusing on nearby objects such as reading, computer work or writing. They will often try to squint when trying to distinguish when looking or focusing in nearby objects, which may lead to headaches. While there is no clear answer to what causes long sightedness, a common perception is that it may be a result of inherited genes or simply a condition that comes as one gets older.
On the other hand, a person may suffer from short sightedness if the eye is too long. It may also be a problem when the strength of the cornea or crystalline lens is stronger than usual. This is a common problem and it can range from mild to severe cases. In mild cases, treatment may not be required, while in severe cases, the vision of a person may be significantly affected. While the condition is rare in children, it usually manifests itself during puberty and gets gradually worse as the eye is fully grown. A sign that a child may be suffering from short sightedness may include constantly rubbing their eyes, sitting too close to the TV, complaining of tired eyes or finding it difficult to read the whiteboard when sitting from a far but reasonable distance.
To treat long sightedness, a convex lens will usually be placed on the eye to enable proper sight. This works by moving close objects forward, enabling the retina to focus correctly. However, treatment is not usually needed for children or young adults since their eyes will usually adapt. On the contrary, a concave lens is used to counter the effects of short sightedness. This is usually by a means of concave lens which is placed in front of the eye. It acts by moving the image back, thus clarifying the image.

This would be to eliminate a potential eye condition that could become more damaging if left untreated. It is also advisable for adults to have an eye test at least every two years.
